Jammu, October 10, 2026: In observance of World Palliative Care Day, the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu recently conducted a Continuing Medical Education (CME) session titled “Pain Management – An Essential Part of Palliative Care”. This essential programme sought to enhance understanding of comprehensive pain relief strategies while significantly impacting the quality of life for patients battling cancer and other terminal conditions.
With approximately 130 participants—including consultants from varying medical fields, postgraduate residents, and healthcare staff from both district hospitals and private entities—the CME fostered a collaborative environment for sharing insights and clinical experiences related to palliative care. Such gatherings play a pivotal role in the progressive dialogue about optimal pain management.
The event featured the launch of a dedicated palliative care file, signalling a strong commitment to fortifying palliative care services. This initiative aims to cultivate a more structured methodology in supporting oncology patients and those facing severe health challenges.
Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Principal and Dean of GMC Jammu, oversaw the programme. A well-rounded organizing team included Dr. Rajesh Mahajan as Organising Chairperson, Dr. Madan Katoch as Co-Chairperson, and several other specialists tasked with the scientific aspects of the event.
The CME focused on key areas such as pain assessment, appropriate use of opioids, holistic approaches to palliative care, and the vital role of nurses in providing supportive care. These discussions underscored the importance of compassionate communication and a multidisciplinary approach to mitigate the multifaceted struggles—physical, psychological, social, and spiritual—that patients may endure.
Anchored by Dr. Jasmine Chaudhary and Dr. Heena Saini, the evening ensured seamless transitions between sessions, maintaining high engagement levels throughout. In addition, a poster competition titled “The Last Chapter Can Still Be Beautiful,” invited participants to creatively showcase their grasp of palliative care principles, focusing on dignity, comfort, and compassion at life’s end.
As the CME wrapped up, attendees pledged to integrate effective palliative care practices into their routines, thereby ensuring timely relief from pain and fostering a compassionate environment for individuals grappling with serious illnesses.
